When traveling to Africa, it’s important to be respectful of the local culture and customs. Some general “dos and don’ts” include:

Do’s:

  • Research the country or countries you plan to visit and learn about their culture, customs, and laws.
  • Dress modestly, especially when visiting places of worship or more rural areas.
  • Be respectful of local traditions and customs.
  • Learn a few basic phrases in the local language.
  • Be prepared for unexpected changes in plans or circumstances.
  • Purchase travel insurance.
  • Be aware of the risk of disease and take preventive measures such as getting vaccinated.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t assume that all of Africa is the same. Each country and region has its own unique culture and customs.
  • Don’t be disrespectful of local traditions and customs.
  • Don’t take pictures of people without asking for permission first.
  • Don’t assume that all locals speak English.
  • Don’t carry large sums of money or valuables with you.
  • Don’t ignore advice from local authorities or your embassy regarding safety and security.
  • Don’t engage in illegal activities, such as drug trafficking or illegal wildlife trade.
